I am selling a beautiful 5-string Ibanez BTB 705 bass guitar. This is a very rare model - it was only produced in 1999-2000, at the very beginning of the BTB series. It was the top model of the Standard line, manufactured at the legendary Fujigen factory in Japan. While in the following decade Ibanez relocated most of its production first to Korea and then to Indonesia and relied on cheaper materials, the initial intentions of the makers are evident - BTB stands for 'butique', and the series was destined to be a venture into the more luxurious segment. And it was - at least until the subject was taken up by accountants....
Fortunately, in 1999 the Japanese clearly saved no expense.
So here we have a massive ash body with an ovangkol top, a three-piece maple neck with seasoned rosewood fingerboard and solid Gotoh keys. The electronics are passive Ibanez DFR humbuckers and an active, two-battery powered Vari-mid 3-band EQ Hi-Fi circuit. There's plenty of knobs to play around: volume, balance, high, low and a dual midrange control (boost strength and frequency - it takes some getting used to).
The guitar also has a Neutrik socket and a very cool MonoRail-2 bridge which makes changing strings a breeze.
The bass is really fantastically put together, which, by the way, has always characterized guitars from Fujigen. The boutique character of the early BTBs manifests itself in the details: the mother-of-pearl markers, the exotic top on the headstock or the wooden flap from the entry to the (double!) truss rods. My favorite details, however, are the super pleasing sanding of the neck and the thin layer of darker wood between the ash and ovangol - it's simply pretty.
Condition is excellent - body, neck and headstock have almost zero scratches, frets show little wear, truss rods and tuners rotate easily. Strings action is very low. The only flaw is really the slightly clogged mid-knob.
The bass is also surprisingly light for the size (because BTBs are, in general, big boys) - it's only 4.2 kg. I used to own a 4-string version from the same year and it was way heavier. Also, whereas the 4-string one had a quite chunky neck, the 705's is very thin. With wide spacing, it's super easy to slap here. Being a 35-inch scale bass, Ibanez also has a powerful and springy B string.
I sell the bass with perfectly matched hardcase.
Ibanez is based in Poznań, Poland, but I can safely send with DPD.
